Belated results from the Truro/P=E2=80=99town and Brewster to S. Wellfleet =
NABA=20
counts on July 12 and 19 are pasted below.

=20

Butterfly numbers this year are the worst I=E2=80=99ve ever seen them in th=
e=20
coastal SE MA places I frequent =E2=80=93 almost no skippers or hairstreaks=
, with=20
some exceptions (the weirdly big colony of Striped Hairstreaks clustered on=
=20
maleberry in Provincetown). Coppers and crescents, usually the most=20
abundant species, are MIA as well. It=E2=80=99s not just butterflies, flowe=
rs=20
normally buzzing with bee, wasp, and butterfly activity have been nearly=20
vacant all summer. It=E2=80=99s striking, and I have no explanation. Hopefu=
lly it=E2=80=99s=20
a one-year anomaly.

=20

A highlight from Truro was three Variegated Fritillaries mating and=20
ovipositing on bog violet in a very strange, hyper-specific wetland type=20
where I=E2=80=99ve seen them before out here =E2=80=93 a wild cranberry swa=
le transitioning=20
to salt marsh. There were no highlights for Brewster, it was dismal.
