I drove through Sampson County this afternoon, stopping at spots that
looked good for butterflies. My "route" included a few spots in Clinton, NC
and then along NC 24 between Clinton and Roseboro, NC. I pieced together a
list of 16 species at 7 stops. My highlights included a Checkered White, a
new species for Sampson County; 1 Byssus Skipper, the first in Sampson
County since Harry LeGrand saw one at Pondberry Bay Preserve in 2006; 1
Dion Skipper, the first since Harry LeGrand saw 1 at Pondberry Bay Preserve
in 2005; and, 1 Black Swallowtail, the first since, you guessed it, Harry
LeGrand, saw one at, you guessed it, Pondberry Bay Preserve, in 2005.
Looking at the Butterflies of NC website, Butterflies of North Carolina
<https://auth1.dpr.ncparks.gov/nbnc/a/accounts.php>, it's likely a lot of
my recent records would be the firsts in a while. My combined list, for all
7 spots, is below. Pics of the Checkered White and Dion Skipper can be seen
here, Mike Turner | Flickr <https://www.flickr.com/photos/61962421@N05/>. Good
butterflying.

Black Swallowtail 1
Spicebush Swallowtail 1
Palamedes Swallowtail 1
Eastern Tiger Swallowtail 1
Sleepy Orange 60
Cloudless Sulphur 7
Checkered White 1
Cabbage White 2
Variegated Fritillary 4
Common Buckeye 76
Silver-spotted Skipper 3
checkered-skipper sp. 30
Horace's Duskywing 4
Dion Skipper 1
Byssus Skipper 1
Fiery Skipper 106
