The 32nd annual Wake County Butterfly Count was held on Friday, August 14. We had 18 counters in 9 groups traipse across 13 sites on a hot, muggy, partly cloudy day. Temperatures peaked in the mid-90s, and many withered from the heat. This season=E2=80=99s weather has been challenging- extreme = drought through June, followed by a July soaking with over 10 inches of rain, and another dry spell in August. In addition, the Umstead Park crew (Jeff Pippin, Ryan Chaffee, Leah Fowler and Ava Mackay-Smith) were dismayed to find that the power easement there had recently been cleared with mowing and herbicides- a disaster for the some of our rarer species including Swarthy and Crossline Skipper, and Common Wood-Nymph. We tallied 44 species- below our count=E2=80=99s average of 49. Total numbe= rs were 1845 individuals, but 46% of those were one species: Fiery Skipper (695). Most abundant butterflies were the Fiery Skipper, Sleepy Orange (147), and Variegated Fritillary (100). Notable species include: First, the happy return of the Checkered White (4) after an absence of 11 years- found in a field near Schenck Forest; Juniper Hairstreak (2) at Anderson Point Park; Great-spangled Fritillary (1), Common Wood-Nymph (1), and Byssus Skipper (1) at Umstead State Park; Southern Pearly-eye (6), Creole Pearly-eye (1) and Northern Pearly-eye (10) at Horseshoe Farm; Eufala Skipper (4) at NCSU Arboretum, NC Museum of Art and Thornton Road greenway; Southern Skipperlings (10) at the NC Museum of Art; Anglewings were in short supply, but Painted Lady (2) were at NC Museum of Art and Thornton Road; American Lady (1) at Durant Nature Preserve, and Red-spotted Purple (3) at Umstead and Buckeye Trail. Notable misses included: Red-banded Hairstreak, American Snout, Question Mark, Comma, Viceroy, Swarthy Skipper, Crossline Skipper and Dion Skipper.
