This is the first year in a decade, by my rough recollection, that Ocola Skipper is nearly absent from the NC Piedmont, as of late August. Yes, we have seen 1-2 reports on a count here and there, but I'm not seeing photos of them on iNaturalist, even in the NC Coastal Plain. Yes, it is more of a late summer northbound migrant, but typically some of the eggs laid by females the year before would have produced new adults here this year, and that didn't happen -- presumably the drought did not let that happen. I still have yet to see an Ocola Skipper in NC in 2026, and the Gulf Fritillary and Long-tailed Skipper are also WAY down and barely registering a blip so far. Most of us haven't seen these either this year. Certainly, the coastal areas of SC, GA, and much of FL also were in drought for much of the first half of 2026, as well.
