Late blossoming Ironweed is for the most part only found i= n compartments burned in the current year so I tend to look for tracts burn= ed in the current year and then concentrate on those areas. Over the past two days I crisscrossed most of my favorite tracts in Blocks = A and B of the Game Land and while I did find a number of areas with lush g= reen, post-burn Wiregrass, I found only a few areas of good Ironweed bloom.= I do not know the extent to which the burn ban impacted the Game Land bur= n schedule. It does feel like a bit of a "double whammy" with the drought = itself compounded by a significant reduction in fall nectar plants due to f= ewer burned areas. Time will tell. On Tuesday I concentrated on Richmond County spending most of my time on th= e move, Several of the field areas produced good numbers of fresh looking = Common Buckeyes and Variegated Fritillaries. Sleepy Oranges were abundant = and Cloudless Sulfurs were common. I found 4 Southern Cloudywings includin= g 2 on a single Ironweed. I had no interesting skippers on Tuesday. On Wednesday I started in Scotland County, again crisscrossing the areas on= either side of Hoffman Road. I found almost no areas of good nectar plant= in Scotland County and by mid-afternoon I returned to Block A and Richmond= County. At 2:45 I spotted my 1st interesting skipper, a fresh Byssus Skipp= er, a pretty modest reward for 2 days of searching.
