Folks, I ventured away from the Art Museum parking lot this morning, to beat the ex= treme heat. I hardly need to say it was a blazing sun in blue skies and a co= ntinued lack of rain other than a sprinkle for several weeks. There ARE mor= e butterflies around than earlier, but still the diversity remains low. Here= are my totals for an hour ranging as far as Sculpture Hill and the apiary. B= razilian Verbena was in bloom in many places despite the drought.=20 Sleepy Orange 18 Cloudless Sulphur 12 Cabbage White 1 Gray Hairstreak 1 Monarch 2 Variegated Fritillary 22 Common Buckeye 25 Pearl Crescent 4 Silver-spotted Skipper 1 Common Checkered-Skipper 6 Horace=E2=80=99s Duskywing 4 all males ZARUCCO Duskywing 2 males WILD INDIGO Duskywing 4 continuing Duskywing sp. 2 Fiery Skipper 125+ out of control! OCOLA SKIPPER 1 FOY I don=E2=80=99t recall ever putting Ocola Skipper in Wake in caps before, bu= t they are scarce in NC this summer. This one was fresh and on verbena next t= o the parking lot.
