Francis Marion National Forest, Berkeley County, SC. FR 212 from Highway 45 north on 212 to about half-way to 204. Drove about 3 miles with 6 stops. September 3, 2026. 11:10 am- 1:45 pm. sunny and 89F. Dennis Allen, Clay and Pat Sutton Pipevine Swallowtail 1 (spider caught) Black Swallowtail 4 Eastern Tiger Swallowtail 4 Palamedes Swallowtail 22 unidentified dark swallowtails 7 Cloudless Sulphur ~220 Little Yellow 3 Sleepy Orange 23 Gray Hairstreak 3 Red-banded Hairstreak 2 unidentified hairstreaks 2 Gulf Fritillary 68 Pearl Crescent 9 Common Buckeye 30 Georgia Satyr 1 Monarch 9 Horace's Duskywing 6 Zarucco Duskywing 2 Swarthy Skipper 1 Fiery Skipper 1 Little Glassywing 1 Delaware Skipper 1 Dun Skipper 5 Eufala Skipper 1 Twin-spot Skipper 29 Salt Marsh Skipper 1 Ocola Skipper 1 unidentified skippers 3 The low numbers and diversity of skippers are strikingly poor in comparison to years past. Extensive coverage of Starry Rosinweed (just past its prime) along both shoulders most of the distance to the sharp road bend was attracting all species except Little Yellow and Georgia Satyr. Many other nectar sources at various points along the road included Bushmint (Hyptis), Black-eyed Susan, Sneezeweed, Blazing Star, and Ironweed, Eryngo, and Pickerelweed but almost no butterflies utilizing them. |
