Good afternoon butterfliers,
This morning, Leah Fowler and I ran two Carolinas Butterfly Monitoring Program surveys at Bluestem Conservation Cemetery under clear skies and hot temps. Monarchs put on a great show, while grass skippers were low in diversity and spreadwings were uncooperative for ID. Here is our full list of 25 species, excluding unidentified leps:
- Eastern Tiger Swallowtail - 9 - Pipevine Swallowtail - 1
- Sleepy Orange - 18 - Cloudless Sulphur - 10
- Eastern Tailed-Blue - 24 - Summer Azure - 4 - Gray Hairstreak - 3 - Red-banded Hairstreak - 3
- *Monarch - 49 - wow!* - Variegated Fritillary - 5 - Great Spangled Fritillary - 2 - American Lady - 2 - Red Admiral - 1 - Red-spotted Purple - 1 - Common Buckeye - 30 - Pearl Crescent - 54 - Hackberry Emperor - 1
- Silver-spotted Skipper - 1 - Common Checkered-Skipper - 9 - Fiery Skipper - 13 - Sachem - 8 - Crossline Skipper - 5 - Swarthy Skipper - 1 - Zabulon Skipper - 3 - Little Glassywing - 1
Afterwards, I stopped by the NC Botanical Garden for extra butterflies. It was blazing hot by now, and butterfly activity was a bit lower than I'd hoped, but I at least picked up a few different species from Bluestem, bringing my total up to 29 species for today. Here is my list from there:
- Eastern Tiger Swallowtail - 3 - Pipevine Swallowtail - 1 - Black Swallowtail - 1
- Sleepy Orange - 7 - Cloudless Sulphur - 2
- Eastern Tailed-Blue - 12 - Gray Hairstreak - 2
- Monarch - 5 - Common Buckeye - 5 - Pearl Crescent - 5 - Carolina Satyr - 1
- Silver-spotted Skipper - 7 - Fiery Skipper - 18 - Clouded Skipper - 1 - Least Skipper - 1
Good butterflying, Ryan Chaffee Cary, NC
