Other than enjoying an excellent display of Liatris secunda (hu= ndreds of flowering stems), I had zero success with any skipper other than = an occasional duskywing. The only Dotted Skippers reported from the Caroli= na Sandhills NWR are first brood. When I turned my attention to the NC Sandhills Game Land in Richmond County= I was not optimistic. It has been a tough year for skippers. After criss= -crossing "Block A' I was able to find a few areas of late blooming Slender= Ironweed, a species preferred by Dotted Skippers. I found my first worn a= nd torn Dotted Skipper in a field margin on August 31st. Per my recent rep= ort, I had better luck success on September 1st, finding 3 fresher Dotted S= kippers in 3 locations. I returned Thursday, September 3rd and concentrated of several of the bette= r areas of Ironweed. After a slow start I photographed 2 Dotted Skipper on = a single clump of Ironweed in mid-morning and by 1 pm I had located and pho= tographed 2 more in an area 3 or so miles to the east. 3 of the 4 were mal= es. I added a worn Byssus Skipper and just before leaving spotted a colorf= ul male Whirlabout posing on Ironweed. I have not seen a Gulf Fritillary, a Little Yellow, a Eufala Skipper, an Oc= ola Skipper, etc. in the sandhills. The good news is the Dotted Skipper app= ears to be a species that can do well in a hot, dry year. Spicebush Swallowtail 25+ Palamedes Swallowtail 18 Eastern Tiger Swallowtail (female) 1 Monarch 3 Variegated Fritillary 30+ Common Buckeye 30+ Sleepy Orange 100+ Cloudless Sulfur 30+ American Lady 1 First in a while. Painted Ladies have been more common. Southern Cloudwing 1 Horace's Duskywing 5 Whirlabout 3 BYSSUS SKIPPER 1 Worn. DOTTED SKIPPER 4 3 or 4 were males. In 3 locations.
