Francis Marion National Forest, Berkeley County, SC. FR 212 from Hwy 45 to FR 204. Drove about 5 miles with 6 stops; walked each about 1/4 mile, 15 minutes. September 19, 2026. 10:50 am -1:30 pm Dennis Allen Pipevine Swallowtail 1 Palamedes Swallowtail 1 unidentified dark swallowtail 1 Cloudless Sulphur 145 Little Yellow 9 Sleepy Orange 16 Gray Hairstreak 9 Little Metalmark 12 Gulf Fritillary 28 Pearl Crescent 18 Common Buckeye 23 Carolina Satyr 2 Monarch 1 Long-tailed Skipper 2 Horace's Duskywing 1 Swarthy Skipper 2 Clouded Skipper 4 Fiery Skipper 2 Tawny-edged Skipper 1 Whirlabout 1 Southern Broken-Dash 4 Byssus Skipper 1 Dun Skipper 3 Twin-spot Skipper 2 Ocola Skipper 11 unidentified skippers 2 Starry Rosinweed has mostly gone to seed with some scattered blossoms; These were being used by most Cloudless Sulphurs and some of the Gulf Fritillaries, Common Buckeyes, Monarch, Sleepy Oranges plus some of the skippers (Long- tailed, Fiery, Ocola). A new showing of Black-eyed Susan attracted Pearl Crescents and Little Metalmarks. Gray Hairstreaks and most of the other species were on or around Mistflower, Hyptis, Snow Squarestem, or Blazing Star. Although late-summer and fall migrants are in evidence, numbers are historically low as are the numbers and diversity of resident skippers for this time of year. As severe drought status continues, ditches and even pools at the ends of large culverts are dry. |
