I spent about 1 1/2 hours this morning -- sunny and warm of course -- working the edges of the large N.C Fairgrounds parking area, with a short visit to the upper areas of nearby Art Museum grounds. The parking area had been recently mowed, and a fairground worker had a truck along one edge and was cutting down taller vegetation along one edge. He drove by me and chatted and said it was fine to walk around the place but that if I saw kids doing wheelies in their cars to tell them to stop doing that, as the fair staff do NOT want mobs out there blocking off the entrances and making a mess of the place. (Yes, mobs of such thugs do block off city streets and other public places, especially at night, to create havoc.) He was very nice, but I left him knowing that I didn't really want to confront hoodlums if I saw some. He did say what I expected -- the field there won't be in use until mid-October for the two weeks of the fair for remote/shuttle parking. Here are my totals, mostly in taller (6") vegetation around the northern side, with only *Lespedeza cuneata* in bloom now. I was able to distantly glean a few species from the butterfly bushes on the Bandwidth property. At the Art Museum, most things were on Verbena near the musical swings. dark swallowtail 1 Black or Pipevine most likely, on the butterfly-bushes Sleepy Orange 8 Cloudless Sulphur 1 Checkered White 6 continuing at the parking lot and edges Variegated Fritillary 3 Common Buckeye *40* Common Checkered-Skipper 6 Fiery Skipper 30 mostly at the verbena Southern Skipperling *7 *most in the taller grasses between the Bandwidth property and the dirt track at the parking lot edge So, diversity is very low, but at least the Checkered Whites and Southern Skipperlings are doing fine. Wake County slid into Severe Drought in last Thursday's U.S. Drought Monitor, which was expected. Formerly had been shown as "only" Moderate, but I know that the Raleigh area had been much drier than the airport and western Wake in recent weeks.
