Hi butterfliers,
Today, I headed to a couple of Croatan National Forest sites in Jones and Craven Counties for butterflies. It wasn't as warm as I'd hoped (high 70s most of the day) and was quite windy, but it was at least sunny the whole time. The major nectar sources were Blue Mistflower, which was all over the place along roadsides, and, to a lesser extent, Boneset. I also picked up a meager list in Carteret County while driving to the Croatan. Here is my full list:
*Carteret County* - along roadsides/in medians while driving
- Cloudless Sulphur - 26
- Gulf Fritillary - 1
*Jones County* - Island Creek Trail. Targeted Intricate Satyrs, but no success; probably too late in the year by now or just too cool today
- Cloudless Sulphur - 5 - Sleepy Orange - 2
- Gemmed Satyr <https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/404038618> - 1 - my consolation prize for no Intricate, lol
- Clouded Skipper - 5
*Craven County* - Various sites, lots of stops along roadsides for Mistflower
- Palamedes Swallowtail - 12
- Cloudless Sulphur - *119* - Sleepy Orange - 30 - *Little Yellow <https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/404036486> - 1* - FOY finally
- Gray Hairstreak - 20 - Red-banded Hairstreak - 3 - *Great Purple Hairstreak <https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/404038126> - 3* - Eastern Tailed-Blue - 26 - much more than last week
- Common Buckeye - 47 - Monarch - 10 - missed in Craven last week - Variegated Fritillary - 5 - Gulf Fritillary - 1 - Viceroy - 1 - Pearl Crescent - 28 - Common Wood-Nymph - 4 - *Georgia Satyr <https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/404037931> - 4*
- Silver-spotted Skipper - 7 - Clouded Skipper - *170 *- practically everywhere on the Mistflower, most I've ever seen at once - Fiery Skipper - 17 - *Yehl Skipper - 14 *- good numbers on Mistflower - Ocola Skipper - 7 - Dion Skipper <https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/404037335> - 1 - Swarthy Skipper - 1
*24 species and 571 individuals* (the majority being Clouded Skippers or Cloudless Sulphurs).
Good butterflying, Ryan Chaffee Morehead City, NC
