Good evening butterfliers,

Today I went to Croatan National Forest in Craven and Carteret Counties, NC
for butterflying. I was there from around 9 until 2 pm when it started to
rain. The weather started partly cloudy but became overcast after 10:30.
Despite the suboptimal weather, there was still decent activity, and I came
across 2 gorgeous Red Cornsnakes
<https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/405480858>! Notably missed
Georgia Satyr and Yehl Skipper this week. Here is my full list:

*Craven County* - primarily powerline and roadside habitats; primary nectar
was Blue Mistflower with some on Virgnia Thistle, Boneset, and Glade Lobelia

- Palamedes Swallowtail - 1

- Cloudless Sulphur - 36 - far fewer than the last 2 weeks
- Sleepy Orange - 6

- Gray Hairstreak - 2
- Red-banded Hairstreak - 2
- *Great Purple Hairstreak
<https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/405626980> - 1*
- Eastern Tailed-Blue - 2

- Gulf Fritillary - 1
- Common Buckeye - 14
- Viceroy - 1
- Pearl Crescent - 20

- Silver-spotted Skipper - 9
- Clouded Skipper - *386 - huge numbers on Blue Mistflower*
- Ocola Skipper - 29
- Swarthy Skipper - 1
- Fiery Skipper - 9
- Least Skipper - 1
- *Lace-winged Roadside Skipper
<https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/405627692> - 1* - almost
missed in the sea of Cloudeds

*Carteret County* - primarily savannah and roadside habitats; primary
nectar was Blue Mistflower and Turkey Tangle Frogfruit on roadsides. Very
little nectar in the savannah; the small amount of Carphephorus is severely
stunted in growth.

- Cloudless Sulphur - 20
- Sleepy Orange - 1

- Gray Hairstreak - 3 - 1 recently eaten by an Ambush Bug
<https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/405616556>
- Red-banded Hairstreak - 1
- Eastern Tailed-Blue - 1

- Little Metalmark - 4 - mostly out of the savannah on roadside nectar
plants

- Gulf Fritillary - 1
- Common Buckeye - 20
- Pearl Crescent - 1
- Common Wood-Nymph - 1

- Clouded Skipper - 6
- Fiery Skipper - 1
- Ocola Skipper - 19
- Least Skipper - 2

Overall, a solid day with *20 species and 605 individuals*, with an easy
majority being Clouded Skippers.

Best,
