This wasn't intended to be a butterfly field trip, just a quick look at
the once wonderful butterflying location on the south side of Tryon
Mountain at about 1600' ASL, and then afterwards a walk with a friend at
Ridge Road ~2900' ASL northeast of the 3200' summit. However, Jeff Peppin
wanted me to record it since there are so few reports from Polk County.
The lower elevation, overgrown gravel road and road side, which NC DOT had
cut back to within an inch of the ground a year ago, still had little
vegetation except grass. Had they also herbicided it? I saw 3 butterflies-
1 E.Tiger Swallowtail
1 Silver-spotted Skipper
1 Fiery Skipper

Up above near the Tryon Mountain peak had wildflowers and some butterflies-

1 dark, unid Swallowtail
8 Cloudless Sulphur
1 Gulf Fritillary
1 Variegated Fritillary
2 Pearl Crescent
3 Fiery Skipper
2 Sachem
2 Clouded Skipper
