Folks,
This morning, I was joined by Lori Arent to visit two of three butterfly sites in western Raleigh that I often visit. We started at the State Fair remote parking area near Schenck Forest for a brief visit, and then headed over to Raulston Arboretum by 10:00. Both of these sites will be difficult to access from Oct. 15-25 owing to the State Fair. (I should be able to easily visit the nearby Art Museum grounds during this period.) The weather, as seemingly always in 2026, was sunny, low humidity, and mild to start with and warm nearing 11:30. We DID have about 1.5" of real rain on Sunday, two days ago. The list below combined both sites, and most were at Raulston; (SF) = State Fair parking area:
Pipevine Swallowtail 12 Sleepy Orange 18 Cloudless Sulphur 35 Cabbage White 2 (low!), No Checkered Whites at SF; done for the season? Red-banded Hairstreak 1 my first in Wake in a few months Monarch 12 Variegated Fritillary 5 American Lady 1 Painted Lady 2 lots of statewide records posted to iNat in recent months Common Buckeye 30 a few at SF Silver-spotted Skipper 1 worn Common Checkered-Skipper 12 a few at SF Horace's Duskywing 1 worn male Fiery Skipper 40 a few at SF Sachem 1 female Eufala Skipper *3 *easily overlooked, but I had help! Clouded Skipper 35 SOUTHERN SKIPPERLING *16 *all at SF, and some quite fresh
Note the continued near-absence at Raleigh "garden" sites in 2026 for Gulf Fritillary, Long-tailed Skipper, and Ocola Skipper. I'll have to travel toward Wilmington to see these in some numbers this year!
