The 210 Red-banded Skipper count was the highest that I have ever tallied. I
only examined and counted those within 2 m of the edge of the road (checking
to see if there were any Gray Hairstreaks; there were not), and I had to
ignore hundreds of others beyond 2m. They were almost entirely associated with
the Goldenrod in full bloom. All other butterfly species were also on or
around the Goldenrod but most Cloudless Sulphurs, Gulf Fritillarys, and Ocola
Skippers were on the few remaining Cutleaf Coneflower patches. Less abundant,
small blue asters also attracted hairstreaks and skippers. Bees, wasps, and
mosquitos were abundant. Lovebugs and dragonflies have disappeared.
