MBC Fall Meeting 4:30 - 7:30 pm Mass Audubon Broad Meadow Brook in Worcester
4:30 PM - *POTLUCK SUPPER* - bring a favorite dish/dessert to share 5:15 PM - Election and Business Meeting 6 PM - Michael C. LaScaleia, Arnold Arboretum 7 PM - Photo sharing
Join us at 4:30 PM for a POTLUCK SUPPER, followed by a business meeting, and our speaker.
Our guest speaker Michael C. LaScaleia will present *Invasive Plants, Native Controls*.
Invasive plants have spread across New England, and some butterflies and moths have followed them in. These insects could act as biological control agents that nobody released, and yet the plants keep winning. In this talk I'll cover where these "neo-native"
herbivores came from, what they're doing to their new hosts, and why it isn't enough. Along the way we'll explore the chemical defenses of the plants, the parasitoids and predators waiting for the caterpillars, and how hard it is for a caterpillar to survive. Michael C. LaScaleia is Katherine H. Putnam Fellow at the Arnold Arboretum at Harvard University. Michael completed his PhD on spatial interaction among trees, caterpillars, and parasitoids at UConn in 2024. Since then, he has been researching invasive plant-native caterpillar interactions at the Arnold Arboretum. He grew up in Sudbury, Massachusetts, and loves studying the native insects and flora that reside in New England's forests.
HATS AND TEES - Our new tees and hats will be for sale at the meeting! Hats are $30, tees are $30. Tees are available in 6 colors. Images are on our website www.massbutterflies.org . Cash or check only.
