Folks,

As the day was sunny, quite warm -- about 77-80 -- and of course low
humidity and bone dry -- I tried a possibly last butterfly walk at the Art
Museum grounds in Raleigh. The Frost Aster is still abundantly in bloom,
with millions of white flowers over many square meters of ground,
especially around the hill and the swings. I did better -- oddly enough --
than 4 days ago, maybe because it was warmer. Here is my list -- the first
number -- as compared with a similar effort on Oct. 26 (second number); I
have already reported for October 26, so Jeff Pippen should not include
these in the database, but it is nice to compare the totals:

Sleepy Orange 8 -- 6
CLOUDED SULPHUR 1 -- 1 maybe the same fresh male as 4 days ago; this
time I saw it perched
Orange Sulphur 2 -- 5
Cloudless Sulphur 3 -- 1
[Cabbage White 0 -- 1]
[Monarch 0 -- 2]
Variegated Fritillary 12 -- 5
Common Buckeye 7 -- 6
Pearl Crescent 3 -- 0
Common Checkered-Skipper 40 -- 35 still very active and in reproductive
mode
Fiery Skipper 30 -- 20 mainly worn and in survival mode, I'd guess
Eufala Skipper 2 -- 0
SOUTHERN SKIPPERLING 2 -- 0 on aster at the hill

Lori Arent found 10 Skipperlings in mid-August on the hill, for the Wake
County butterfly count; I kept missing them there until today. So, I was
paying close attention to low aster flowers around the edge of the mowed
grass. I did not visit the State Fair remote parking lot today, where there
has been a larger colony this summer. Still no dark brown skippers here --
Clouded and Ocola -- though I have been seeing them at nearby Raulston
Arboretum.
