Subject: Locations to find Orange Sulfurs
I'm a postdoc at UNC studying Orange Sulfurs (Colias eurytheme) with Dr. Joel
Kingsolver and looking for places to collect them. I'm located in Chapel HIll
so closer to there is better, but I'm willing to travel a long distance if
need be (my one current collection site is near Goldsboro, an hour and a half
drive for example).
For a little more detail, I'm working on two projects with the butterflies.
One is raising their caterpillars in the lab under various conditions. I only
need to collect for this once or twice, and I can travel pretty much any
distance within a day's travel for this. If possible, I'm also looking for
Clouded sulfurs (Colias philodice) for this experiment.
The second project involves regular sampling of smaller numbers to monitor
seasonal changes in wing pattern. Since I'm looking to sample every one or two
weeks, I can't travel quite as far, but anywhere within about a roughly two
hour drive of Chapel HIll will be helpful (I know they're scarce in the
immediate vicinity since few people grow alfalfa in the area).
Any tips I can get on places where folks have seen this species would be
