Subject: [NorWestLeps] More California Tortoiseshell in San Francisco Bay Area.

Yesterday (9-26-2017) there were reports of California Tortoiseshell butterfly near the Pacific coast in Marin, Sonoma and Mendocino counties, something not seen in recent years.

Today (9-27-2017) I can report numerous California Tortoiseshells more inland in Novato, Marin Co. My records over recent years show that Indian Valley OSP has been the most likely preserve in the town to find the occasional
record of a Tortoiseshell butterfly in September. Today at Indian Valley OSP in Novato were seen 80+ California Tortoiseshell in about 1 hour, 1-2pm i.e. very numerous.

No photograph was obtained, since the butterflies did not settle. They were quite recognizable though as California Tortoiseshell. On the main trail which was all I looked at, about 90% were heading down hill and about 10% uphill.
Butterflies were more numerous in the lower half of the trail (dappled sunlight through woodland) than in the upper half (more open with few trees): presumably there is some kind of funneling effect onto the trail through the woodland.
On this out and back trail, there were noticeably fewer butterflies on the way back, about 2pm and after.

So, there are torts around in Marin and the California Pacific Coast. It will be interesting to see how widespread they are.

David Rawlinson, Novato, CA.
