Subject: [MassLep] All quiet in Wayland area today

Today I traveled to Wayland, Concord and Sudbury to scout for Frank's
upcoming October Derby and found all very quiet on that front.

Weather was sunny with temperatures between 75 and 79 degrees.

Wayland Community Gardens (10:50 to 11:50am):

Cabbage White 35+

Orange Sulphur - 2

Clouded Sulphur - 1

Unidentified Hairstreak - 1 (larger than a Gray but faded and flew
before I could get close to it)

American Lady - 2

Painted Lady - 12 (most in Barbara Howell's garden)

Cow Commons, Wayland (11:50am to 12:05pm):

Cabbage White - 1

Orange Sulphur - 3

Sedge Meadow, off Moore Road, Wayland (12:10pm to 12:15pm):

Nothing but weeds which were over my head with no trails other than the
one around the edges. Not having a machete with me I quickly abandoned
this once great spot.

Nine Acre Corner, Concord (12:25pm to 1:30pm):

Cabbage White - 5

Orange Sulphur - 6

Clouded Sulphur - 1

Sudbury Community Gardens (1:50 to 2: 20pm):

Cabbage White - 4

Orange Sulphur - 3

Sedge Meadow has not been cut this season and is heavily overgrown. The
weeds are over 6 feet in height and a machete would be helpful if not
necessary! Like Charlie on the MTA you might enter this meadow and never

Wayland Community Gardens on the other hand has been mismanaged by
constant and close cutting of the grasses near the road and the
individual gardens to the extent that the dock is no higher than one
inch off the ground and the Bronze Coppers have apparently left this
site. Not saying you might not find one here but they are not as common
as they used to be before the constant and close cutting regime started.

Sudbury Community Gardens is also a wreck with very few gardens planted
and heavy weed infestation. Maybe the heavy Spring rains prevented
gardeners from planting this year.
