Everyone:

I spent most of the day checking out various spots around Lake Isabella
in Kern County, California. Localities checked included the town Lake
Isabella, Erskine Creek Canyon very late in the day, Wofford Heights near
Lake Isabella itself, about 2 miles south of Kernville at the eastern base
of the Greenhorn Mts., Hanning Flat and Weldon. Not much rabbit brush is in
bloom yet so it is not yet prime time for desert strays but it was a desert
species invading the Sierra Nevada that dominated the show today, taking
advantage of plants growing in areas under the higher water level of the
lake last July. I have never seen Dainty or Dwarf Sulphurs (Nathalis iole)
in the numbers I saw below Tillie Campoground at Wofford Heignts or on the
other side of the lake at Hanning Flat. In fact I have never seen Nathalis
iole at either of those locations though I have taken singletons at Weldon
and Riverkern north of Kernville. I suspect Nathalis iole is transiently
established at favorable portions of Lake Isabella (I suspect an
unidentified matted plant with very small white flowers) rather than this
being a migratory movement. None were seen at other locations and the
majority of individuals were quite fresh.

Butterflies encountered, 28 species. September 28, 2017

Funereal Duskywing (Erynnis funeralis)-one at Paul's Place, Weldon.

Large White Skipper (Heliopetes ericetorum): Singletons at Kernville and
Weldon, Lake Isabella (town); common in Erskine Crk. Canyon E of Lake
Isabella

Juba Skipper (Hesperia juba): several) locally common at Weldon (Hwy, 58 &
Kelso Creek Rd.)

Fiery Skipper (Hylephila phyleus phyleus): a few at Wofford Heights and town
of Lake Isabella; one at Weldon.

Sachem or Field Skipper (Atalopedes campestris campestris)-several at Weldon

Woodland Skipper (Ochlodes s. sylvanoides): singletons at Lake Isabella
(Town) and Erskine Creek Canyon

Sandhill Skipper (Polites sabuleti sabuleti): one below Tillie Crk.
Campground near the lake.

Western Tiger Swallowtail (Papilio rutulus): one at Lake Isabella (town)

Checkered White (Pontia protodice)-common

Cabbage White (Pieris rapae): common below Tillie Camp Wofford Heights,
Weldon and Lake Isabella (town)

Orange Sulphur (Colias eurytheme) singletons Wofford Heights, Weldon and
Lake Isabella (town)

Dainty Sulphur (Nathalis iole) Probably saw 40 total

Purplish Copper (Lycaena helloides): ten or more at Wofford Heights with
Nathalis iole and more than that at Weldon, one at Hanning Flat

Gray Hairstreak (strymon melinus): Bush topping on giant rabbitbush bush
south of Kernville, scarce at Weldon

Western Pygmy Blue (Brephidium exilis)-universal

Marine Blue (Leptotes marina)-one at Wofford Heights

Acmon Blue (Plebejus acmon acmon)-universal

Desert-Edge Metalmark (Apodemia virgulti near mojavelimbus) Double brooded
population with main flights May-June and October, just now emerging south
of Kernville. Six seen in a half hour, associated with Eriogonum wrightii.

Cythera Metalmark (Apodemia mormo cythera): This and the above metalmark do
occasionally overlap contrary to what some believe. They may have been
common in Erskine Crk. Canyon earlier in day. I saw but one.

Mylitta Crescent (Phyciodes mylitta mylitta) singletons at Wofford Heights
and Weldon.

Painted Lady (Vanessa cardui): also commn most localities.

American Painted Lady (Vanessa virginiensis): Two rabbitbrush topping with
the Gray Hairstreaks south of Kernville

West Coast Lady (Vanessa annabella)-one at Hanning Flat

Buckeye (Junonia coenia grisea): scarce all year in the region but saw close
to 40 today at most sites.

California Sister (Adelpha californica): came out of the oak forests to come
down near the lake at Wofford Heights and Hanning Flat (singletons): several
in Erskine Creek Canyon in their usual habitat.

California Ringlet (Coenonympha "tullia" California): two in Erskine Creek
Canyon

Monarch (Danaus plexippus): only one seen, Wofford Heights.

Queen (Danaus gilippus thersippus): only one seen, flying with Nathalis iole
below Tillie Crk. Camp at Wofford Heights.

Despite loads of alkali mallow at Hanning Flat, I saw no Checkered Skipper
species, no Gray Hairstreaks or Mallow Scrub Hairstreaks there. Narrow
leaved milkweeds at Weldon and Wofford Heights appeared long past. Very
little rabbitbrush in bloom at Weldon.

Best Wishes, Ken Davenport <kdavenport93306...> or
