Hey,
Nice day to be out and about in butterfly land. Saw 634 Painted Ladies,
30 Common Buckeyes, 753 Monarchs.....1 Mourning Cloak, 1 Least Skipper, 1
Variegated Fritillary, 1 Pearl Crescent, 1 Red Admiral.
Other species, too, in varying numbers.
Several thousand Herring Gulls at Horseneck Beach investigating untold
numbers of washed-up Surf Clams.
160 Monarchs playing hide-and-seek in foot-tall grasses at the back of
Allen's Neck (not a single Monarch was visible in just scanning the
field...they had to be practically stepped on).
If I had stayed in the Gooseberry-Horseneck Beach area all day, the
recorded numbers of Painted Ladies and Monarchs would have been 1000+ for
each (based on measured rates of 130-140/hour).

Brian Cassie . (There is no joy in Patsville, MA)
