Would be interesting to know if the solvent in these markers deteriorates t=
he wing scales and membrane, or if the damage comes from the scrubbing acti=
on of the felt tip, or both.=C2=A0 At one point in time this was a popular =
method for marking insects.
Reminds me of Fred Urquhart's first book (1960), and his description of a g=
entleman in Texas who put an address on monarch wings using an ink pad and =
stamp. Others in the past used various forms of paint and inks, dyes and so=
on. Even whiteout or Liquid Paper and nail polish!

I saw this mentioned last year by Carol Pasternak the Monarch Crusader, she=
wanted to alert people to the disastrous affects of using permanent marker=
to mark Monarch butterflies' wings.=C2=A0 Apparently, the area marked can =
cause the wing to tear and it leaves holes. This was brought to my attentio=
n again recently so I thought I would try to get the word out.=C2=A0 No one=
who loves Monarchs wants to harm them.=C2=A0 =C2=A0
https://flic.kr/s/aHsm6jFXsGThese are before and after photos, just in case=
the photos don't post.=C2=A0=C2=A0
Since reading Carol's post from last fall of 2016, I have not been marking =
Monarchs.=C2=A0 I used to mark with a dot and have even marked co-ordinance=
s or numbers.=C2=A0 No more. Monarchs with torn wings will never be able to=
migrate.=C2=A0
It has also come to my attention that there are individuals using Monarchs =
to write the names of deceased loved ones as a memorial to them.=C2=A0 Thes=
e are wild creatures and should not be used in such a manner.=C2=A0
