Subject: [MassLep] Broad Meadow Brook Baltimore update
Today one of our last Baltimore checkerspots emerged from it's chrysalis
at Broad Meadow Brook in Worcester
and the first of the next generation of caterpillars hatched from their
So for this year, we started with about 25 caterpillars which we kept
netted throughout their development. Of these about 50% reached
adulthood, 25% escaped and we lost track of them (someone stole one of
our nets and some cats ran off and another net got disturbed and a few
more ran off) and about 25% appear to have died in the chrysalis stage.
These last chrysalis have turned dark and appear to no longer be
developing, but I'm still seeing what more I can learn about them.
Again my thanks to Don Adams for contributing the eggs that are
currently hatching out. We're excited to see if we can raise a full
generation over the course of the next year.
