Subject: Re: [SoWestLeps] RFI: Yucca Giant Skipper locations? 2nd request!

Not to dissuade you and quest of seeing an adult Yucca Giant Skipper in Ap=
ril. Anyone can play the state lottery and can win.=C2=A0
But your request is not an easy one to answer. I only know of a small hand=
ful of people that saw an adult in the field. And I'm not one of them. Only=
a very small number of those sightings were by luck or accident.

The others have gone by the route of finding their parasite's host plant a=
nd digging around the base and looking for their underground larval tent en=
closures fashioned by the immature caterpillar. Then taking the tent and im=
mature and trying to rear it to adulthood.

Believe it or not, that way is much more successful than being at the righ=
t spot at the exact right time in the chill of the early morning to find an=
adult before it warms up and takes wing for the day. They're extremely fas=
t flyers and most won't know one just whizzed by.

My suggestion to you and your husband would be of the mindset not see it a=
nd maybe you will. I'm still playing that game years later.

Best wishes,

I posted this question in early February & only had one response, & not a =
positive one. Has anyone actually ever SEEN a Yucca Giant Skipper in southe=
rn California? I'm beginning to wonder.

I would really like to try to see one in April. Can anyone provide any fai=
rly recent intel on ANY possible locations? We have looked in Anza Borrego =
SP many times with no luck. We will be in AB again for a couple of days in =
mid April. I read that the ssp. harbosoni has been found just west of Sciss=
or's Crossing (we've looked!), &=C2=A0 in/near the San Dieguito lagoon area=
. That their host plant can be found on the hillsides there, but it just lo=
oks so developed when perusing a map. Any suggestions would be greatly appr=
eciated. Please email me offlist.=C2=A0
