Mark,

After your account, I'm even more convinced they must pupate down in the le=
af litter and the one I saw had just eclosed. Like yours, mine also didn't=
move. Do you know if they get tended by ants? I wonder if they get help =
during pupation. Hopefully, this might be a good year for them and I'll ge=
t many more photos. Speaking of hairstreaks, I got a couple Soapberry Hair=
streaks, Phaeostrymon alcestis, on 6 June 2018, at the WMA I live next to. =
They were on orange milkweed, but I have yet to find the soapberry tree or=
any more of the hairstreaks since then. These little puzzles are fun.

Take care,
Bryan

Bryan,

Interesting. Last spring while out butterflying in the forests of southern =
Pennsylvania =96 looking mostly at Erynnis and Papilio =96 I found a fresh =
new m-album flopping among the leaf litter (the forest was just beginning t=
o thaw). I was similarly astounded, as I did not expect to see it in that a=
rea so early in the season.

I was carrying my net, so I was quite happy to drop the net over the top of=
the sprite little fellow. To my great dismay, it quickly went =93limp=94, =
and fell deep into the leaf litter. My first attempts to carefully dig for =
him were successful, as I was able to regain sight =96 but it simply went l=
imp again, falling ever deeper - never to be seen (by me) again. At the tim=
e I did not consider the high likelihood that the butterfly had just emerge=
d up out of the leaf litter =96 but that would explain how quick it was to =
give in to gravity rather than overcoming it when threatened. Smart! Had it=
taken flight, I surely would have caught it.

Now =96 it probably would have posed for 20 minutes for photographs had I n=
ot dropped my net over it. Doh!

All,

I've always been on the lookout for the White-M Hairstreak, Parrhasius m-al=
bum. I don't know if they're rare in central Oklahoma, or if they pretty m=
uch just stay high up in the oaks. I spotted my very first one in 2010 at =
all places, the Oklahoma City Zoo. I'm not really a zoo-goer, but we had f=
amily (with young kids) visiting, and decided to check it out. They had a =
'butterfly garden' and low and behold, perched on a coneflower, was a White=
-M. Of course, I didn't have my camera... Then fast forward to 2015 and I=
was at the Chickasaw NRA on top of Bromide Hill. It was early in the seas=
on and working some tree flowers was a White-M. It's body was not lined up=
parallel with my film-plane, and once it finally twisted into position, I =
fired a shot. Off it went never to be seen again. My shot was not a keepe=
r and I've still not seen any more in years of looking. Anyway, I was out =
on my property (Cleveland County) on Monday, 23 March, photographing early =
spring wildflowers and morel mushrooms, when a hairstreak flushed from belo=
w my feet. I immediately saw blue and my initial instinct was a Red-banded=
.. It didn't go far and landed back down in the leaf-litter. I bent down a=
nd couldn't believe it, here was a White-M. It looked very dark and strang=
e, so I changed my gear over to macro and took some photos. Besides the da=
rk color, it was also missing its palps. So, I wonder if perhaps it was ve=
ry freshly eclosed and that's why it was dark and perhaps the palps fell of=
f as it was prematurely flushed? Also, I'm assuming these guys pupate in t=
he leaf-litter? I'd like to hear your thoughts. Who would have ever guess=
ed I'd find one of these on my property.

Take care,

Bryan
