Further information about the location of the hairstreak horehound
patch. The link to Google Maps shows that this area is quite a ways from
the campground - at least 2.5 miles.    Diane Touret

Diane,

I followed road 29 west until it split. At that point, I took a right
onto 4472. There's good bit of elevation gain along this route (about
800 gain) so bring lots of water.

There was a Tailless Scrub-Hairstreak reported near the old concrete
tank on Monday. Alan went again today and had a number of hairstreaks,
best being SIlver-banded.

I checked out most of the ones that I could get to without impaling my boots and legs with cheat grass awns, but I mostly saw Echo Spring Azures and a few Texan Crescents on the horehound. I walked all the way up the road in the main canyon past the spring to the point where the road in the canyon starts to go uphill away from the canyon bottom. I saw about 30 butterfly species, but nothing like the numbers reported for Saturday. When I left around noon, I felt really discouraged and somewhat inept due to my lack of success!

Peter - I don't think I've ever been that far! I find the roads in that
area very confusing and I'm not too sure that I could find your area. I
think that it is FM29 to at least the spring with the pipe; but the road
seems to split there, with one road with deep ruts going uphill to the
south. I thought that this just went to an informal camping area, so
I've never taken that road, but have always stayed on the road along the
creek because it had more water. Do you take the road away from the
creek at the spring to get to your site or stay on the road in the main
drainage? If you use the main drainage road then I guess that I just
need to go further than my turn-around point. I think everyone was
checking out the horehound patches closer to the campground. I know that
Alan never went any farther than the spring with the pipe near the
sycamore grove.

I might go back on Friday, but I can't go on Saturday because of a
commitment. I will also need to get there early (probably around 7 AM)
because I am not a fast walker and it will take me about 3 hours to go
2.5 miles if I stop for birds and butterflies!

Thanks for the info! Diane Touret
