Hi. everyone,=20

=C2=A0

In this time of sequestering, I've been spending time at Bunched Arrowhead =
Heritage Preserve as it is still open and rarely do I see anyone=C2=A0else =
while there.=C2=A0 If we do cross paths, we step out of the way and maintai=
n the 6' distance.

=C2=A0

While there this afternoon, it occurred to me that I'm probably passing by =
a lot of caterpillars, but although=C2=A0I look for them on young leaves th=
at have been chewed from the outside, I'm not seeing them.=C2=A0 Hence, I h=
ave two requests.
=20
- Where should I be looking for caterpillars this month in the piedmont?
- This afternoon when I got back from the preserve, I saw that an upstat=
e master naturalist posted on the site a request for identification of a ca=
terpillar he was seeing.=C2=A0 Below is what he wrote and a couple of photo=
s.=C2=A0 My caterpillar guide books aren't helping, although I'm probably j=
ust overlooking the obvious. =C2=A0

Thanks for your help.

Can anyone help with the ID.=C2=A0=C2=A0
Oconee county location, first seen two days ago. They stay together in grou=
ps (called an army for a group of caterpillars?). Two distinct groups on di=
fferent parts of the same small tree. I think the tree is a relatively youn=
g Willow Oak?
They are pretty strikingly black without any specific other colors I can se=
e on various specimens. Not sure if early instar and will change later? In =
two days, they have not moved from their group locations. No webs or silk s=
tructures seen. The ones I have in a jar are eating the leaves. The groups =
on the tree have done relatively little damage so far while I am watching, =
but the tree shows some leaves had been eaten on a close by area for one. O=
ne army is on a bare twig which has no new leaves this year, but they have =
not moved elsewhere.

Oconee county location, first seen two days ago. They stay together in grou=

fferent parts of the same small tree. I think the tree is a relatively youn=

They are pretty strikingly black without any specific other colors I can se=
e on various specimens. Not sure if early instar and will change later? In =
two days, they have not moved from their group locations. No webs or silk s=
tructures seen. The ones I have
in a jar are eating the leaves. The groups on the tree have done relativel=
y little damage so far while I am watching, but the tree shows some leaves =
had been eaten on a close by area for one. One army is on a bare twig which=
has no new leaves this year, but
they have not moved elsewhere.</span></i><span style=3D"font-size:10.5pt;f=
