Subject: Oak Hairstreaks - many at Ft Fisher NC
I visited Fort Fisher today. The fort area, aquarium, and ferry are all closed, but you can explore the roadsides. Several privet are in bloom in a patch along the road at the pull-off for the ferry information sign a couple hundred yards before you reach the ferry. Every privet bush had multiple "Southern" Oak Hairstreaks and I estimated about 30 at this one clump, which was conservative. I searched for a White M but could only come up with a Gray. I walked the road back toward the aquarium to the ninety degree turn, counting Oak Hairstreaks in the scattered privets and looking unsuccessfully for White M. Had 38 more Oak Hairstreaks in this quarter mile stretch. List follows.
Black Swallowtail 6
Cloudless Sulphur 3
E Tailed Blue 4
Oak Hairstreak 68
Gray Hairstreak 1
American Lady 3
Red Admiral 2
Saltmarsh Skipper 15 mostly on clover along the road
Driving back I stopped at another big patch of privet on the Kure Beach back road. Nothing was on it, but had a Phaon Crescent on the road edge.
