Odd how butterfly abundance seems patchy to the extreme this season. Here =
in Leesburg, VA. I have seen at best, maybe 10-15 all season, and most were=
Cabbage Whites fly-throughs. My garden is starting to bloom now, some Bud=
dleia opening up but not one Skipper, no Cabbage Whites, no Nymphalids, not=
hing! This is how it=92s been since mid-May when I counted, at best, a 5 S=
ummer Azure count one day on my Wafer Ash trees which usually act like a ma=
gnet for Summer Azures.

About 2 weeks ago, a Giant Swallowtail passed through and I did subsequentl=
y find two eggs, which have not hatched and one appears black and shriveled=
.. No mate for her? Does not surprise me with such low numbers.

I have a report from Huntsville, AL. where things sound eerily similar to m=
y observations. A week ago we went to the top of Blue Mountain in western =
Fauquier County and counted 4 Spicebush Swallowtails whereas any other year=
they would be up there by the dozens or hundreds. Not one Tiger Swallowta=
il of any kind!

Yet I hear contradictory reports such as a =93strong flight=94 of Appalachi=
an Tigers (at Green Ridge?).

Harry Pavulaan
