Howdy folks,

While walking our dog in Amethyst Brook Conservation Area in east Amherst y=
esterday, she flushed one of those hyperactive brown woodland butterflies o=
ut of a trailside patch of long grass. It perched and spread out for some s=
unbathing. I was unable to get a look at its underwings, but from its upper=
wings, I=E2=80=99m fairly sure that it was an Appalachian Brown (Lethe appa=
lachia):=20

org/observations/51234481>

About 20 minutes later, we were wandering along the brook, and I noticed tw=
o large butterflies over a patch of gravel, at times sharing it, at other t=
imes battling over it. One was a Tiger Swallowtail, no clue which of the lo=
cal two species, it left before I got remotely close to them. The other was=
black, a bit smaller, and more cooperative, eventually allowing me to get =
a couple of identifiable phone-photos, turning out to be a Spicebush Swallo=
wtail (Papilio troilus):

Josh
