Howdy folks,

Our yard wildflower meadow continues to bloom spectacularly, at this point =
mostly with New England Aster and various sorts of goldenrod. Not many butt=
erflies around, overwhelmingly European Honeybees (or, as some of my pollin=
ator-phile friends call them, Pollen Pigs) and Northern Paper Wasps, with a=
scattering of other bees, wasps, flies, and the occasional Locust Borer.

One exception: The day before yesterday, I walked into my wife=E2=80=99s of=
fice, which has a window facing this meadow. I looked outside and noticed a=
big orange butterfly nectaring. I was expecting a Monarch, but it somehow =
looked wrong, so I kept watching it until I had the right view to ID it: Gr=
eat Spangled Fritillary. There were lots of these around in July, a few in =
August, but this was the first one I=E2=80=99ve seen in at least a few week=
s. Looking at others=E2=80=99 posts here on MassLep, I see only four others=
reported so far this month: three from Newbury by Matthew Arey 9-3 and 9-1=
3, and the fourth by Jeff Boettner from Shelburne 9-7.=20

It continues to be a slow year for me moth-wise (really need to buy some be=
tter lights before next spring). Recent sightings at night by our porch lig=
hts have included a False Hemlock Looper (Nepytia canosaria) and a Pale-ban=
ded Dart (Agnorisma badinodis), while a walk along the shore of the Quabbin=
yesterday brought me to a Yellow-collared Scape Moth (Cisseps fulvicollis)=
nectaring on some goldenrod.=20

Cheers,

JSR
