I tested Jeff=E2=80=99s suggestion on posted photos on the Butterflies of N=
orth Carolina

Northern Pearly-eye: ALL 4 photos show only white dots on the HW eyespots.=
So, correct if using the eyespot test

Southern Pearly-eye: THREE of the 4 photos show at least one white bar in =
at least one HW eyespot. However, the Catawba County one shows ONLY round w=
hite dots. Thus, that record might be suspect. Southerns are quite rare in=
most of the Piedmont Except along the E and S edges such as in Wake County=
.=20

We need to check additional photos on other websites and elsewhere to see h=
ow well this holds up. We need a new field mark, as sometimes the club colo=
r isn=E2=80=99t obvious

Southerns should be all orange or yellow;
Northerns and Creoles should be dark with orange or yellow only at the end=
of the club. Also, Northerns should be absent or very rare in the Coastal =
Plain.=20=20
