Neil; Elevations at Sonora Pass range from about 9500-10,200' and above El=
lery Lake from about 10,200' to 11,000, the latter elevation by Oakley Shie=
lds. The host plant in the Sierra is Oxyria digyna and several times I have=
found American Coppers taking nectar on the flowers of what I assume is th=
at plant. The Sonora pass locality is the safer of the two localities, thou=
gh I once got caught in a rock slide there, I had to get behind a big bould=
er for protection. The north side of Dana Plateau above Ellery Lake is very=
steep and the footing difficult. Recent erosion has made this site much mo=
re difficult, or maybe I am just a lot older. There is a trail up the south=
side of Sonora Pass where American Coppers can occur, but they are also al=
ong the stream. Don't look for them on the north side of the Pass, the habi=
tat is all wrong. Best Wishes, Ken Davenport <kdavenport93306...> or f=

Neil: I have never collected American Coppers on Mt. Howard or in Oregon. =
I have collected about 24 American Coppers at Sonora Pass and up an avalanc=
he slope on the north facing slope of the Dana Plateau in the Sierra Nevada=
. Some comments: All my records were from about mid-July to September 7 or =
8. Yes they live on rocky terrain but not necessarily on talus. Usually the=
y favor areas along small streams or drainages where the hosts grow but the=
y often go to small flats or spaces between boulders which shelter them fro=
m winds that are common in their preferred habitats. They are often on stee=
p slopes where terrain is difficult in terms of footing.

While I do find Rockslide Checkerspots (Chlosyne whitneyi) in the Sierra N=
evada use talus slopes in drier situations, American Coppers tend to fly wh=
en snow is still around a little more than the checkerspots. At Sonora Pass=
, I get some American Coppers flying with the Rockslide Chckerspots in deep=
rocky canyons where the host grows. At my other locality above Ellery Lake=
in the Sierra, Rockslide Checkerspots are scarce.

Usually in my quests for American Coppers, I get zero, one or two, never m=
ore sightings than 5 above Ellery Lake. At Sonora Pass if you hit them righ=
t, I have taken 6 and 10 in a day in July. Of course, habits and habitats m=
ay differ in Oregon.
