Several of us had about 4 fresh Little Metalmarks about 3 weeks ago, and th=
at took 3 of us looking hard. It might be getting a tad late, but the main =
issue, as I stated then, was the tragic burning of too large an area, on BO=
TH sides of the road =E2=80=94 eliminating refuges for insects and other sm=
all animals. It=E2=80=99s quite harmful to herp populations as well.=20

Glad you found your other targets, especially at Fort Fisher. Probably wou=
ld not have found anything rare at the arboretum, but there are a fair numb=
er of Zebra Longwings in coastal SC now, so I would not be surprised if sou=
thern coastal N.C. got a report of one or two soon =E2=80=94 maybe at the a=
rboretum.=20

with a Little Metalmark at Holly Shelter, but had no luck. The recent burn a=
long Lodge Road had ample patches of Trilisa odoratissima and a lot of bloo=
ming composites, but no Little Metalmark. Are they already finished? Or vic=
tims of the extensive burn? There were many butterflies nectaring in the ar=
eas I walked and a lot to look at, especially if you are partial to Ocola a=
nd Long-tailed Skippers. I ended up spending far more time than I planned a=
t Holly Shelter and it was 3:30 by the time I got to Fort Fisher and I neve=
r made it to the arboretum. Highlights at Fort Fisher were 11 Phaon Crescen=
ts (most on the old airstrip) and 4 Queens between the ferry parking lot an=
d the boat launch at the end of the road. Total count for the day was 26 sp=
ecies. List for each county follows:
