Lori Arent and I made an attempt to find the now mythical Leonard's Skipper
in this part of NC. They have seemingly disappeared from most of the
Piedmont, for many possible reasons; I saw it often in the 1990s and
2000s. Of course, despite much effort from noon - 400 pm, our best efforts
failed. Most of the former sites that had ample *Symphyotrichum
grandiflorum* now have *Lespedeza cuneata *(planted), grasses (planted),
*Bidens*, and other things. Some of this can be blamed on utility corridor
(gas, electric) mismanagement, some to global warming or other climatic
factors, and some to other factors. We did see a nice variety of species
in the southeastern part of the county -- but there are precious few
pink/blue/purple flowers in bloom, which Leonard's Skippers must have --
yes, they are even more picky feeders than I am. =F0=9F=98=81Note that Sac=
hem has
also crashed in this eastern part of the Piedmont; used to be seen on all
trips in late summer and fall.
