Though not quite as shocking a stray as the Zebra Longwing in Catawba
County is -- Julien McCarthy just sent me several photos of a female
CHECKERED WHITE from the south side of Oregon Inlet just behind the jetty,
in *Dare County*, on October 10. The species is clearly a migrant/stray
out there, as the Butterflies of North Carolina website contains just a
SINGLE record for that well-worked county -- an undated record from an
older atlas, with no specific location known.

Thus, this is a remarkable record indeed! Interestingly, in the same area
he photographed a rare Wilson's Plover and a Piping Plover.
