I made my last effort to look for Leonard's Skipper in central NC this
fall, and as others have failed in recent years, I joined that crowd. The
local abundance of its main nectar plant -- *Symphyotrichum grandiflorum*
-- has mostly disappeared in this region -- in its place are many other
mostly yellow and white flowered things like *Bidens*, goldenrods, Frost
Asters, not to mention things like Dog Fennel and *Baccharis*. I suspect
this lavender-blue aster and most other lavender-blue aster species of
wooded borders -- like *S. patens* and *S. undulatum* -- have been
overwhelmed by taller and more aggressive species like those listed above.
Sadly, Leonard's do not nectar on white or yellow flowers around here --
you are wasting time looking. I did at least see some butterflies, but the
loss of Leonard's is surely tied to the near loss of the large-flowered
blue asters (and what little blazing-star is around). Here are my totals,
from Jordan Dam and a road near Carbonton (Chatham) and several roads near
Glendon (Moore):

CLOUDED SULPHUR 1, - fly-by near the dam
Cloudless Sulphur -, 8
Sleepy Orange 10, 20
Little Yellow 5, 35 most numerous sulphur for the day
Gray Hairstreak -, 1
E. Tailed-Blue 8, 12
Variegated Fritillary 8, 5
Pearl Crescent 15, 12
Question Mark -, 3
Eastern Comma -, 1
American Lady 2, 4
Painted Lady 2, -
Common Buckeye 30, 30
Red-spotted Purple -, 2
HACKBERRY EMPEROR -, - 1 in adjacent Lee County near the Deep River;
extremely worn
Monarch 4, 5
Common Checkered-Skipper 2, 4
Clouded Skipper 1, 5
Fiery Skipper 2, 4
Sachem 1, 2 all males
Ocola Skipper 2, 8
