Upon a response from Harry LeGrand to an inquiry about where he had seen Twin-spot Skipper in Bertie Co., NC some years ago, I worked St. Francis Rd. pretty carefully yesterday, 9/7/21, for about two hours around mid-day. Weather for most of my time there was good, warm & partly cloudy, but there were some periods of overcast.

No luck with Twin-spot, and no surprise on that given how this season is; hopefully the critter persists there and I will try to check again in future years. Still an enjoyable outing, as while ditches adjacent to agricultural fields had been heavily sprayed, lots of nectar along ditches adjacent to woods and under powerlines adjacent to the road. Joe-pye-weed was probably what a majority of butterflies seen nectaring were working, but other popular sources were mistflower, ironweed, and Mikania scandens.

Highlights were my first-of-year Long-tailed Skipper, a beautiful Pipevine Swallowtail, and a Yehl Skipper. I was also impressed with the number of Dun Skippers, even though I kept trying to turn them into other stuff.
