Well, I guess third try was the charm for me this year for a somewhat-focused trip for a wetland skipper in northeastern NC. I wasn't sure if I would get the chance to check marshes to any extent this year, but got the opportunity yesterday 9/12 with nice weather, although a bit breezy at times. Returned via boat to a former field site in North River Game Land on the west side of Taylor Bay in Currituck Co., NC and was fairly confident we would find Palatka Skippers in the fringing sawgrass marsh as I had seen them in numbers there several years ago. Sure enough, around mid-day numerous individuals gave nice looks as they nectared at pickerelweed, my first of year and I think a lifer for Elisa. A Broad-winged Skipper or two were mixed in as well.

The really nice surprise was at least 4 Dukes' Skippers upon our return to the Waterlily Rd. state boat ramp around 3:30 pm. These individuals were even more cooperative than the Palatka Skippers: all 4 of us (including our 6 & 3 year-old's!) were able to study both species well, although that would likely not have happened if I had remembered to bring the camera....

A couple Dukes' were nectaring at mistflower around the edge of the parking area and we saw at least one "pair" with a male in pursuit of a perched female. Not a complete surprise, as I had seen and photographed one individual at the same boat ramp parking area on Aug. 14, 2016, but after several unsuccessful checks of this spot in late summer in the years between then and now I figured our chances were low to see it there in 2021. Thankfully I was wrong!

List below, most everything except the Palatka & Broad-winged Skippers were at the boat ramp.
