I spent the afternoon at the Tar Heel boat ramp on the Cape Fear River in
Tar Heel, NC. There was good diversity today, but not high numbers. This
area received a lot of rain over the past week and that helped a bunch.
Most of the nectaring was on *Verbena brasiliensis*. The highlight, if you
will, was 6 Black Swallowtails. I don't recall ever seeing so many in one
day at this site. I thought I was hallucinating to see this many blacks and
no Palamedes. 24 species today, but nothing really of note, unless 13 Fiery
Skippers are noteworthy. My list is below. Good butterflying.

Black Swallowtail 6
Spicebush Swallowtail 2
Eastern Tiger Swallowtail 2
Sleepy Orange 18
Cloudless Sulphur 1
Cabbage White 1
Summer Azure 1
American Snout 5
Monarch 1
Variegated Fritillary 10
Viceroy 6
Red-spotted Purple 2
Question Mark 1
Red Admiral 1
Common Buckeye 1
Pearl Crescent 8
Southern Pearly-eye 1
Silver-spotted Skipper 8
Common/White Checkered-Skipper 7
Horace's Duskywing 5
Fiery Skipper 13
Clouded Skipper 1
Southern Skipperling 3
Least Skipper 1
