After returning from the mountains yesterday, I was out early this morning checking all the flowers. Today was amazing as far as butterfly activity. The number of species is good, but the number of individuals is really up. Since I was not trying to work, I went from area to area only trying to do counts as accurate as I could. There is no way to get an accurate count for Silver Spotted Skippers since they are on every flowering plant now. The Eastern Tiger Swallowtails are using the zinnias, silphiums, mountain mints, and today were just hanging in groups on the buttonbushes. The Fiery Skippers are on most of the flowers while concentrating on Snow Squarestem and Mountain Mint (Pycnanthemum muticum). After not seeing any Monarchs for weeks, I flushed a Monarch from nectaring on a Liatris squarrosa. I continued to see butterflies while mowing this afternoon and the list for today is below. It is so encouraging to see the plantings just alive with bees and butterflies.
