On still another -- about the 20th day in a row!! -- hot and sticky
morning, Lori Arent and I "scouted out" the grounds of the Art Museum in
western Raleigh this morning, as this is an important area for the upcoming
Wake County butterfly count. I poked around the pond earlier in the year,
mostly for odonates, so we wanted to see how the several zinnia plantings
were faring. The dense zinnia stand on the traffic island at the north
entrance is in full bloom but had almost nothing! The patch planted last
summer by the "ellipse" was in fair bloom and also was terrible. But, the
extensive patch amid the sunflower stands in the back of the big field was
hopping! Yes, there has been no zinnia planting here in 2 years, and it
was hardly in good bloom. But, the butterflies seem to want extensive open
space. Most of the totals below were found here. Note the relatively low
number of individuals other than swallowtails and skippers.

Pipevine Swallowtail 1 male
Black Swallowtail 1 male
Spicebush Swallowtail 8
E. Tiger Swallowtail 20
Sleepy Orange 1
Orange Sulphur 3
Cloudless Sulphur 2
Monarch 1
Variegated Fritillary 7 was hoping for a Gulf Frit, but not yet
American Lady 2
Common Buckeye 3 low

Hoary Edge 1 nice, but have seen it here 3 years in a row
Silver-spotted Skipper 28
Common Checkered-Skipper 5
Horace's Duskywing 1 low
DION SKIPPER 4 was not expecting any this early, but by mid-August; all
on the Pickerelweed at the pond
Fiery Skipper 55
Little Glassywing 1
Sachem 6
Zabulon Skipper 1 male
EUFALA SKIPPER 1 regular here, usually a bit later on
Clouded Skipper 15
Ocola Skipper 1

23 species, including 12 species of skippers!
