I haunted the pollinator garden and the parched fields at Wellfleet Bay thi=
s week, finally getting the first sanctuary/Outer Cape record for Red-bande=
d Hairstreak<https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/133234094> yesterday,=
9/1, on Hoary Mountain Mint. From Tuesday-Thursday, Gray Hairstreak was th=
e most common butterfly both in the garden and elsewhere. I saw not a singl=
e skipper of any species in three days - I'm worried we've lost our Leonard=
's Skippers as I didn't see them last year either, and the scant few asters=
in the fully cooked sandplain grassland they come from are not blooming - =
even bearberry is dying out there. The strip of invasive knapweed that is s=
o loved by butterflies here, including Leonard's Skippers as they move out =
from the field, is toast as well. Plenty of nectar is just a short flight a=
way in the garden and shrub swamps, so I may be making too much of the lack=
of nectar as a variable here.

Spicebush Swallowtail - always one or two around the garden
Cabbage White - omnipresent
American Copper - a few
American Lady - one or two
Pearl Crescent - a few
Monarch - up to 3 at a time
Gray Hairstreak 7 max
Red-banded Hairstreak 1
