Hi, all =E2=80=93 when I moved to Martha=E2=80=99s Vineyard in mid-August, =
1997, the common
late skippers around our Oak Bluffs home were Tawny-edged and Peck=E2=80=99=
s, which
were pretty regular in the yard, and Leonard=E2=80=99s (if I walked a half-=
mile to
the bluestem grassland at Trade Winds Preserve). Zabulon Skipper had never
been recorded on the Vineyard, and the first Vineyard (and Massachusetts)
records for Sachem had occurred just a few weeks before, when two observers
each found single individuals in Chilmark on the day same. It=E2=80=99d be =
five
years before the third Vineyard record of Sachem.

=20

Now? Leonard=E2=80=99s is scarce, even in what was formerly very productive=
habitat,
and Peck=E2=80=99s and Tawny-edged, while still around, are getting hard to=
find and
rarely turn up in our yard. But we=E2=80=99ve had Zabulon Skippers, as many=
as five
at a time, in the yard on a daily basis for a couple weeks now, and they=E2=
=80=99ve
been joined over the last few days by up to five Sachems. Yesterday, while
doing field work on a farm in Tisbury, I stopped counting Sachems when I go=
t
to 85.

=20

There are surely many factors at work. This has been a droughty year, with
uneven effects on butterfly numbers (big year for Swallowtails and Gray
Hairstreak, bad year for virtually everything else). A lot of formerly
undeveloped land around my house has been built on and is no longer viable
skipper habitat. And southern species like Sachem and Zabulon Skipper have
steadily marched northward in response, presumably, to climate change and
perhaps other factors.

=20

But what it all adds up to is a really striking change in the skipper fauna
around here over the last 25 years.
