Subject: Giant Swallowtail Butterfly
Due to internet failure for 10 days, this is a late posting.
On August 31ar slightly worn female Giant Swallowtail appeared in the =
garden, and stayed the entire day,. She kept flying over and around the =
Ptelea trifoliata, resting in several places over the tree, which is =
about 15x15. I checked periodically throughout the day for eggs which =
would be easy to detect as they are orange and show well against the =
dark green leaves. She was here only for the day.
Yesterday while eating lunch in the gazebo, another Giant Swallowtail =
fluttered in, and finally settled on the same lantana at the female had. =
It appeared to be freshly eclosed which (to me) means this was of =
another brood, or a late eclosure of the same brood as the female, given =
the nine day difference. The butterfly didn=E2=80=99t stay long.
After checking the Ptelea this morning, I found one egg tht had been =
parasitized, and a second that I suspected. It=E2=80=99s possible they =
were overlooked when the female came, due to the light, and the leaves =
being underneath overhanging branches. There were several munched =
leaves with with the same pattern, indications of being eaten within the =
same time frame. So, unfortunately, I may have missed the sighting of =
another female that had oviposited earlier.=20
