Here at Swede Park in Gray's River,= from the front porch, I saw two Margined Whites, one Echo Azure, and an in= determinate tatty overwintered anglewing; and in back, just perching on lic= hen on an Asian pear limb, a California Tortoiseshell in almost fresh condi= tion--must have had a good safe hibernaculum. But the climax was back on th= e front porch, where just a few flowers remain on a spiraea bush. A quick, = dark butterfly flew into it right next to me and tried to find some nectar = in the sparse blossoms. I was surprised to see that it was a Brown Elfin, w= hich certainly occurs around here in the hills on various heaths, but which= I haven't seen here on the place for twenty years or more. I've never seen= it around my salal, but have found and reared a larva on an ornamental Rho= dodendron ponticum. Now the rain is back.
