Fellow Leps Lovers, Backyard Butterflies is seeking participants for our NC Under-reported Coun= ty Mothing Project (NCUCMP) citizen science program. Many counties in NC have less than 20 verified observations of moths. That means there are gaps in population and distribution data. We can change that! Here's how: The NC Under-reported County Mothing Project (NCUCMP) conducts two consecut= ive night surveys in an under-reported county in NC. Participants will learn how to light trap moths, make observations, and make preliminary IDs. All ages = and experience levels are welcome. All that's needed is a desire to learn how to light trap moths and record observations. For experienced moth-ers these surveys will provide you with an opportunity to see habitat specific moths. Lodging accommodations at the survey site for participants is provided for free. Participants are responsible for their own transportation to the moth survey site, travel, meal and incidental expenses. Survey sites are AirBnB rental houses with a backyard that looks suitably "mothy". The properties = can be previewed here: https://www.backyardbutterflies.org/surveys-bnb/ To become a participant you will be required to create a user account on the Backyard Butterflies website, complete an online orientation, and submit a registration form. The registration form requires proof of vaccination and that you have an iNaturalist account. If you don=E2=80=99t have an iNatural= ist account you can create one for free. We will be using iNaturalist to help with preliminary identification and centralizing our observations. Using your phone's camera will work -- no need for a fancy camera.
