Today, Jeff Pippen, Will Cook, and I ventured from the Triangle area to Pea
Island to look for the 11 American Flamingos, which we had in the scope by
around 9:00. Birding otherwise was poor owing to high water levels in all
impoundments and the hot and stagnant weather, so by early afternoon we
started to do some butterflying. Audrey Whitlock told us by e-mail about
"lots of skippers" on *Lippia* [frogfruit] in the Oregon Inlet vicinity, so
she joined us and we indeed saw lots of skippers, though no Phaon Crescent;
the site is probably too far north for them. Audrey joined us at another
stop on Bodie Island where there were thousands of square-feet of blooming
sneezeweed (*Helenium amarum* -- a weed!) on lawns. There were literally
HUNDREDS of skippers on the yellow flowers of the 1-2" high plants, so we
must have spent over an hour there.

Lastly, we went over to Roanoke Island and checked a few patches of Lantana
where Audrey has had good butterflies in the past. Sure, enough, we added a
few more species there.

Here is the list, with the two Outer Banks sites combined first (OBM =
Outer Banks Middle) and the last site (OBU = Outer Banks Upper) separate,
for mapping purposes on the Butterflies of North Carolina website.
